THE BENEFITS OF LEAVES, TWIGS & BRANCHES

The fibrous texture of the twigs promotes dental health by aiding in cleaning teeth and gums. Chewing also provides a source of entertainment and mental stimulation, making a rabbit’s environment enriching and engaging. Trees must not be sprayed or diseased.

Pear – Leaves, twigs and branches can be served fresh or dried. Rich in tannin they are excellent in preventing coccidiosis

Hazel – Very popular feed, good for liver and biliary disorders.

Apple –  Leaves, twigs and branches are good for digestive problems, provides energy and supports wound healing. Served fresh or dried.

Cottonwood – The cottonwood tree branches and the cotton plant twigs are safe and enjoyable for your rabbits. This also means that it is safe to give your rabbit a blanket that is made from 100% cotton materials. Some rabbits like to chew and tunnel under blankets, so it’s good to know that cotton is safe for them.

Hawthorn – Whole plant can be fed including the fruit, improves blood circulation and lowers blood pressure. Fruits should always be in moderation as a treat.

Willow Leaves – these long thin twigs combined with the leaves make it easy to form willow rings. They contain natural compounds like salicin, which can help in relieving minor pain and inflammation in rabbits.

Alder Branch –  Helps with pneumonia, infections and digestive issues

Lilac – For the rabbit owner who loves to garden, who wants safe trees that are smaller and full of flowers, the lilac tree offers a beautiful presence, and scent and its safe for your rabbit. Rabbits can eat the bark, branches and flowers, but not all rabbits find it palatable.

Common Hornbeam – Fever-reducing and good for respiratory problems. Part of the birch family.

Birch – Good for urinary tract diseases as it is a diuretic, stimulating the kidneys and is anti-inflammatory. Also metabolism stimulating. Excellent for making chew toys and furniture.

Oak –  is a great, durable wood for making furniture products for your rabbit. It is still up for debate whether the leaves are toxic or not. So to be safe, stick with branches as chew toys.

Poplar – Rabbits can eat the branches and twigs fresh from the tree. They don’t have to be dried. They may even like to munch on the leaves too. You can also construct furniture or enclosure accessories out of poplar woods. These can be sturdy but also safe for rabbits.

Maple – This is a slightly sweeter wood, making it a more tempting type of chew toy for most rabbits. It’s also a safe wood to use for furniture as long as there isn’t any extra paint or toxic varnish. Safe to eat, with anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and anti-bacterial properties.
